New York Mets Outfielder Juan Lagares to Play with Torn Thumb Ligament

New York Mets Outfielder Juan Lagares suffered a thumb ligament injury to his left thumb but he is expected to continue playing.

Team doctors in Manhattan examined the injured thumb and recommended a few days rest because of swelling. Lagares will then be reevaluated to see if taping the thumb or a splint will help him be able to grip a bat.

The injury occurred when Lagares made a diving catch in the outfield against the Miami Marlins and became apparent when later on he was unable to make a batting appearance.

If Lagares is able to play with the injury it’s likely that he will have ligament surgery in the offseason.

Pain, swelling, and bruising are common symptoms of ligament injuries combined with limited motion due to pain and stiffness. The thumb can also feel unstable when pressure is applied, such as with gripping or pressing.

For partial ligament injuries, icing, elevation and splinting can lead to recovery. Complete tears may benefit from surgery to repair the ligament and restore stability to the thumb.
